In 1915, Legion of Honor founders Alma and Adolph Spreckels began assembling what American dancer Loie Fuller called “the greatest collection of perfect Rodins in the world.” The Spreckels’ holdings, comprising some of the most remarkable sculptures made during the artist’s lifetime, formed the Legion of Honor’s inaugural collection when it opened in 1924.

Join Thomas P. Campbell, director and CEO of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, and Amélie Simier, director of the Musée Rodin, Paris for a lively discussion on the inimitable French sculptor Auguste Rodin (1840–1917). This fascinating conversation will touch on the history, collection development, and pervasiveness of Rodin at each institution.

This conversation is co-sponsored by Villa Albertine San Francisco

About the speakers

Thomas P. Campbell  has served for over a decade as director and CEO of two major US art museums — the Metropolitan Museum of Art from 2009–2017, and the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco since 2018. Campbell has dedicated his life to the preservation, study, and promotion of art as a gateway to human understanding.

Amélie Simier is the director of the Musée Rodin, appointed in May 2021. A graduate of the Ecole du Louvre and the Institut National du Patrimoine, she is a specialist in 19th-century sculpture, a subject she taught at the Ecole du Louvre for 15 years. Before directing the Zadkine Museum, and then the Bourdelle Museum, she was curator of the 19th and 20th century sculpture collection at the Petit Palais.
