Isabella Lores-Chavez, associate curator of European paintings, will discuss how political conflict, displacement, and colonial expansion throughout this period affected the work of Dutch artists, who depicted daily life and visions of the fledgling nation as never before.

About the curator
Isabella Lores-Chavez is associate curator of European paintings at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, where she is responsible for the collection’s Dutch and Flemish paintings. She is the curator of the exhibition Celebrating 100 Years at the Legion of Honor. Isabella completed her PhD in art history at Columbia University in 2022, with a dissertation about plaster casts in 17th-century Dutch paintings. Her doctoral work was supported by fellowships from the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts.

This program is part of our “A Closer Look” series, a new curatorial lecture series exploring both the development of the Museums’ distinct collections and their art historical significance. Beginning at the Legion of Honor and expanding to the de Young soon, the series features in-depth presentations that highlight collection gems while demystifying creative practices that span thousands of years.
