Photo Competition: “A Ruscha With Words”

The image on the far right (OK) should be cropped to eliminate the black strip at the bottom (it's background, not a part of the image). This might require the detail to be enlarged a bit to fit the rectangle.

Along with a passion for California and the West Coast, a key theme in Ed Ruscha's work and Ed Ruscha and the Great American West is the abundance and playfulness of words. Throughout his career, Ruscha experimented with words, song lyrics and sayings, even filling notebooks with them and waiting for the moment that the temperature of a word becomes "really hot."

Outside the galleries, words make up a huge part of our daily lives, from billboards and food packaging to street signs and magazine covers. We’re bombarded with words that make us laugh, question something, or tap into in our subconscious. Channeling Ed Ruscha, we’re asking you to photograph a word that you think best defines “California cool” and upload it to Twitter or Instagram using the hashtag #RuschaWithWords. The image could be part of a billboard, poster, advertisement or one you've sketched yourself.

The prize? A signed Ed Ruscha exhibition catalogue and a pair of VIP tickets (worth over $275). The deadline for entries is September 19th and the winner will be selected and notified by September 22nd. See the world through Ruscha’s eyes and find out what words will become “really hot” to you.

Update: This contest is now closed. Thank you to everyone who submitted an entry! You can view the winning posts here and here. See them below alongside our other favorite submissions.
