XX – The Toboggan (Le Tobogan) from Jazz
1947
Artwork Viewer
Matisse’s powerful series of color pochoir for Jazz concludes with The Toboggan. Facing a page of text, this single-sided plate features a figure rendered in blue, with legs and arms outstretched as it falls through empty space composed of deep purple. Jagged yellow and red stars surround the figure during its perilous plummet. Like other plates in the set, such as Icarus, Destiny, and Pierrot’s Funeral, the somber tone and subject of this plate reflect the difficult atmosphere in which it was crafted: the devastating aftermath of World War II.
