While white chemises with gathered collars are a staple of traditional Slavic women's dress in western and southeastern Europe, the distinctive arrangement of the embroideries found on this example are specific to Romania. Among other hallmarks, the embroidered portion on the upper part of the sleeve (or altita) is composed in the conventional style, with five rows of silk and wool embroidery, the uppermost row slightly separated from the rest.
