Walking in rainbow rain
2021
Clad in a gray coat mirroring the fence behind her, the figure in Walking in rainbow rain blends into the urban setting. The rainbow-colored streaks unify and flatten the composition, framed by a monochrome street and fence, evincing Clare Rojas’s focus on exploring “how we unconsciously reflect and become a product of our environments.”Rojas enhances the woman’s connection to her surroundings by flattening figure and ground. While the gray background evokes the presence of San Francisco’s ubiquitous fog, the rainbow droplets streaking across the composition allude to San Francisco’s history with the LGBTQ+ movement. The figure’s gaze is locked onto a small bird—a frequent motif and symbol of freedom in Rojas’s work—hinting at the possibility of taking flight from social conformity.
