Virgin Enthroned with Saints Jerome and Bartholomew and Angels
Artwork Viewer
Painted in costly jewel tones, this grand altarpiece originally graced the chapel of the Frescobaldi family at the church of San Spirito, in Florence. Holding a lily, emblem of her purity, the Virgin Mary regards her son with serene tenderness. At their feet kneel the penitent Saint Jerome, beating his chest with a rock, and the martyred Saint Bartholomew, displaying a bloody knife. All eyes turn to the Christ Child, except for those of the angel at right, who returns our gaze with a placid smile. The artist’s signature appears just below this figure.
