Virgin and Child with Putti
1490-1495
Artwork Viewer
In fifteenth-century Florence, the della Robbia family developed a recipe for terracotta sculpture glazed in bright hues, producing popular compositions that were reproduced for decades, even centuries. This work’s maker, Andrea della Robbia, collaborated with his uncle Luca to establish and carry on their family legacy. A much beloved composition, this Virgin and Child is composed of separately fired sections joined together and framed by a characteristic garland of citrus, pines, and greenery. The bottom register may have contained the original patron’s heraldry, a tower, later effaced.
