A wolf is one of several animals Matisse includes in Jazz, though it is not a staple of the circus, like a horse and an elephant. The wolf’s menacing head, stark white against the rich blue and purple of the background, extends onto both sides of the plate. The curious inclusion of this animal in the book has led scholar Riva Castleman to believe that it symbolizes the Gestapo, the secret police force in Nazi Germany.
