Untitled (Union Street west of Steiner Street, San Francisco)
1906, printed 1943
The 1906 San Francisco earthquake and subsequent fire obliterated almost the entire city, and the event was witnessed and recorded by numerous photographers, most notably Arnold Genthe. Here, Genthe focused on the physical damage to the city’s buildings and infrastructure, depicting the homes uprooted from their foundations and the cobbled streets upturned and twisted by the force of the quake.
