The City (New York Rooftops) comes from a series of works executed after 1924, the same year O'Keeffe and her husband Alfred Stieglitz moved into a thirtieth floor apartment at the Shelthon Hotel located on Lexington Avenue between 48th and 49th streets. The various components of New York's skyline, seen from her lofty studio window, are simplified into overlapping planes. Hazy and abstracted, the artist renders distinctive outlines rather than specificities. Filling the sheet with velvety dark forms, she captures only the essential elements of New York's hauntingly beautiful skyline.
