Unknow Know With What Is 12
2021
Chris Johanson
Chris Johanson’s art, a meditative practice, focuses on heal-ing. Using discarded materials like drop cloths and clothing on recycled stretcher bars, his paintings blend figuration and abstraction. They feature swirling shapes and floating heads, creating energetic, tonally muted compositions that explore impermanence and fluidity. Part of a series of works whose titles play on former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld’s concept of the “unknown knowns,” Unknow Know with What Is 12 posits imaginative work as a survival tactic. Although Rumsfeld offered famously contradictory definitions, including “things that you think you know, that it turns out you did not,” the touchstone for Johanson is Rumsfeld’s method of evalu-ating the “unknown knowns,” which he claimed to be the main purpose of his department, with the work of imagination.
