Triumph of Justice, from The Triumph of the Seven Virtues series
ca. 1535
Artwork Viewer
Justice, adorned in a jeweled crown and flowing robes, sits on a chariot drawn by two unicorns—ancient symbols of Christ. At the far left, Noah and his family, rewarded for their righteousness, are safely ashore after the great flood, while their ark floats in the distance.
Below the ark stand three figures; two have been identified as the statesman Cato and the general Scipio Africanus, whose political and legal rivalries threatened to undermine the stability of ancient Rome.
