Triptych with scenes from the life of Christ
1520-1525
Not on view
Portable altarpieces used for private devotion were often decorated with enamels because of their durability and luminosity. This triptych is illustrated with scenes from the life of Saint John the Baptist: at left, his Baptism of Christ, at right, his beheading, and at center, his preaching in the wilderness. The figure of God the Father reveals the influence of prints produced in and around Raphael’s workshop. The vivid effect of the enamels and the detailed representation of natural elements yields a striking effect somewhere between painting, sculpture, and graphic art.
