In 1820, dancer, choreographer, and teacher Carlo Blasis published his treatise on ballet, the first text to analyze the technique and theory of classical ballet. His series of poses conveys his commitment to achieving a lightness in dance by teaching the physics and geometry of the body moving through space. Blasis is credited with developing the ballet position of “attitude” as well as discovering the spotting technique, used to prevent lightheadedness during a turn. Blasis later became the director of La Scala’s ballet school in Milan, where he worked with some of the most celebrated ballerinas of the nineteenth century, including Fanny Cerrito.
