Traité du Balet
Marie-Laure de Noailles
Artwork Viewer
In this artist book, of which only fifty-six numbered copies were printed, Georgian publisher Ilia Zdanevich (Iliazd) paired a text by seventeenth-century French author Jehan- François de Boissière, on the subject of ballet performances in Toulouse under Louis XIII, with sixty-six original etchings by the French modern artist and patron Marie-Laure de Noailles. Dance and movement are frequent themes in the twenty-one artists’ books Iliazd published between 1923 and 1973 in Paris, and dance is the central focus in Traité du balet (Treatise on Ballet). The book supports Iliazd’s concept of the Futurist ballet, wherein poetic recitation determined the movement of dancers.
