The Second Oriental Head
1635
Not on view
It is not known what inspired Rembrandt in 1635 to create what came to be known as the four "Oriental Heads," four etched copies of tronies by Jan Lievens. A curiously worded inscription along the upper edge reading "Rembrandt geretuckeert" ("retouched by Rembrandt") has led some scholars to attribute these plates to the artist's students, but the majority now accept them as the work of Rembrandt himself.
