The Red Table Cloth
ca. 1927
Artwork Viewer
In 1927, Selden Connor Gile moved to a cottage in the town of Tiburon on San Francisco Bay, where he began to paint more ambitious paintings incorporating bold brushstrokes and colors. The Red Table Cloth appears to depict the interior of his Tiburon home, with a large picture window looking out onto the harbor, which is covered with sailing boats.
The large round table holding a flowerpot, pipe, and matches seems to defy gravity by being radically tilted upward and is equally striking for its rainbow array of sun-suffused yellow, saturated red, and cool blues. The view out the window could be an Impressionist painting in its own right. An actual painting hanging on the wall at the right appears to depict a male and female couple interacting.
