Dirck
Hals specialized in painting groups of youths engaged in jolly conversation. Smiles
and carefree poses convey the playfulness and ease between the men and women. Their
fashionable costumes allude to their wealth, as do the paintings and
instruments that line the wall, and the servant boys relegated to one side of
the room. Dirck was the younger brother of the famous painter Frans Hals, from
whom he picked up a lively movement of the brush and a penchant for staining
his figures’ cheeks pink.
