The Marriage of Tobias and Sarah (The Marriage Contract)
Artwork Viewer
In this biblical scene set in a country house, Tobias, son of the devout Jew Tobit, marries Sarah beneath a wreath of sunflowers, blooms imported from the Americas that symbolized fidelity. Standing beside the angel Raphael, Tobias embodies faith, his gaze directed heavenward. Nearby, the bride’s parents review the marriage contract drafted by a notary, a contemporary character and self-portrait of the artist. Steen transformed the story into an exploration of cosmopolitan life in a Dutch home furnished with commodities extracted through colonial ventures: a Turkish carpet, Chinese porcelain, and a cotton chintz cloth, each traded widely by the Dutch East India Company.
