The Life Force of Peyote
Not on view
Ramón Medina Silva (1930s-1971) was a Wixarika mara’akame (shaman), who led and participated in the annual Wixarika pilgrimage to Wirikuta, the high desert where the sacred hikuri (peyote plant) grows. As part of this pilgrimage, Medina and the other spiritual leaders ingest the plant as a way to connect with the ancestors and regenerate their own souls. Beginning in the mid-1960s, Medina recorded some of his visions from the pilgrimages through so-called yarn paintings by carefully pressing colorful strands of yarn onto wax-covered boards. In this electric image, Medina vividly conveys the power and psychotropic effects of hikuri. Three peyote plants, complete with roots and characteristic buttons, float on a lime-green foreground. Rays of blue and purple yarn emanate from the peyote, showing the energy of the small succulents and merging to create a swirling cubist plane.
