The Last Judgement: The Damned in Hell
ca. 1500
Angels trumpet the Last Judgment, Christ’s return to earth as prophesied
in the Book of Revelation to separate the saved from the damned. Christ the
Judge appears between the lily of mercy and sword of justice. The Virgin Mary
and Saint John the Baptist beseech him on behalf of the faithful as the
resurrected dead rise from their graves. A demon carries one soul to the
eternal torture pictured in the adjacent hell scene. There, a monk, a king, and
a bishop serve as reminders that damnation awaits all but the truly virtuous,
greeted at heaven’s gates by Saint Peter.
