The Holy Family with the Infant Saint John the Baptist
1626
Artwork Viewer
A French expatriate living in Rome, Simon Vouet delivered this painting to Cardinal Francesco Barberini on January 6, 1627. A clerk in the cardinal’s household recorded it as “A round picture on board, with the Madonna, and Our Lord in her arms, and the infant Saint John embracing a lamb.” Vouet’s wife, the Italian painter Virginia da Vezzo, likely posed for the Virgin Mary, dandling the baby Jesus on one knee. In late 1626, Virginia was expecting the couple’s first child, a daughter. Following her birth, the family moved to Paris, where Vouet became the leading artist of the French school.
