The Green Cap
1985
The Green Cap was a collaborative project between artist Alex Katz, publisher Crown Point Press, and printmaker Tadashi Toda, who was working from Kyoto, Japan. Toda, along with Rezo Monjyu, a professional block carver, painstakingly translated Katz’s drawing into a color woodcut proof and awaited the arrival of the artist, who made adjustments to the colors before the final print was pulled. The Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts has nine working proofs for this print, drawn from the Crown Point Press Archive, some with the artist’s annotations indicating his desired changes to the colors. These proofs offer extraordinary insight into the artist’s process and working relationship with the printer.
