The Chiyozuru Teahouse-Orise (Chiyozuru), from an untitled series of teahouses and waitresses
ca. 1794-1795
Not on view
Under Utamaro's hand, the silhouette became a creative feature of the Japanese print. In this, one of a series of three prints, Utamaro used the sliding shoji screen as a device that allows the viewer to see both indoors (the silhouette) and out. It also emphasizes the woman in the foreground as she declines an offer of sake from inside the teahouse.
