Table-worked hair braids with implements, including bobbins, weights, and molds
second half of the 19th century
Not on view
These implements were for use in tableworking to make hair jewelry. In this process, clean strands of hair were gathered and tied with string to a bobbin on one end and weighted on the other through the center of the braiding-table cover. A stick-like wooden mold or form was then tied to the center of the table for the braid to be worked around, often according to a pattern. The braids here were likely intended for use as jewelry chains.
