Strolling Musicians
ca. 1635
Not on view
In this Rembrandt etching from the mid-1630s, a couple of tattered traveling musicians serenade a family who listen attentively through a half-open door. The bulky figure at the left turns the handle of a hurdy-gurdy, while his shorter accomplice plays the bagpipes. The glow emanating from the home's interior serves to spotlight the performers' being in the cold night shadows.
