Self-Portrait of Godfried Schalken
1694
Not on view
The Dutch artist Godfried Schalcken entered the burgeoning art market of London with works that merged the candlelight genre with portraiture. There in 1694 he painted a nocturnal self-portrait in which he holds a candle in his bare hand; he then commissioned this reproduction in mezzotint by the leading British printmaker and publisher, John Smith.
