Based on a 1773 portrait of Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo painted by Franz Joseph Degle (1724-1812), this etching is part of a two-volumes series of sixty heads, the Raccolta di Teste, published between 1774 and 1775 and after drawings and paintings by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo and his workshop. Unlike the forceful images and strong chiaroscuro effects of most of the heads in the series, the portraits of Tiepolo father (inv. 2013.51.75) and son are characterized by extreme delicacy of the printed tones.
