Scene at a Royal Court
Not on view
Originally part of a much larger tapestry, this fragment portraying a royal court cannot be linked to any known narrative or tapestry series. All that can be said fo the subject is that it captures a moment of shock or dismay unfolding in what is probably an "Eastern" court, as indicated by the rendering of the two potentates and their distinctive crowns and collars. Such a setting suggests a bibilical or mythological subject. The fragment is perhaps more interesting for its lavish depection of the luxury textiles of the period -- the dark green satin of one king's robe, the blue moire worn by an attendant, opulent cloth of gold, figured velvet, and pearl embroidery. Equally fascinating is the construction of the "fragment," which is really a series of fragments -- some from the original tapestry, some probably from other tapestries -- cleverly pieced together, with reweaving in the gaps. The sheer number of fragments used and their placement make ti all but impossible to determine how faithfully the composition is to the original.
