The cloth of the western Indian state of Gujarat that is known as patola (singular patolu) features intricate geometric designs formed by the double ikat technique. In this process, pairs of warp and weft threads are tied at regular intervals to resist dye. This tying is repeated for each color that is to be included in the finished cloth. When woven, the dyed threads form stepped motifs, as seen in this scarf.
