Salver representing Moses parting the waves
1575-1585
Artwork Viewer
This salver, or tray, presents a bifurcated scene teeming with figures who watch as Moses, hands outstretched, parts the Red Sea in a celebrated episode from the Book of Exodus. Both the central scene and the surrounding ornament are based on known print sources, repeated here in black and white save for a few touches of peach to enliven both the men and beasts. The reverse is signed by the artist Jean de Court, who belonged to one of the last artistic dynasties in Limoges during the height of its Renaissance production.
