Saint John the Evangelist Celebrating Mass (recto), page from a Bolognese Antiphonary
Not on view
This leaf from an antiphonary showing Saint John the Evangelist twice in the act of blessing and distributing the Eucharist, has been attributed to a Bolognese illuminator, called Maestro del 1328 (Maestro Pietro? Formerly known as the Quarto Maestro di San Domenico) (see Byrian C. Keene in Truth & Beauty 2018). Since the time of Dante Alighieri (1265-1321), manuscript artists from Bologna have been held in high regard because their pages were thought to smile with brilliant colors ("più ridon le carte", Purgatorio XI, line 82). The Master of 1328 (Italian: "Maestro del 1328", also known as "Quarto Maestro di S. Domenico") was an Italian illuminator active in the area around Bologna from about 1318 until 1340, recently so named by Alessandro Conti after the manuscript of the Matricola dei merciai in the Museo Civico of Bologna (MS. 633) which is dated 1328 (Alessandro Conti, La miniatura bolognese. Scuole e botteghe, 1270-1340, Bologna 1981, pp. 81 ff).
