Saint
ca. 1500
Agitated drapery, a severe countenance, and a long coiled beard distinguish this freestanding saint, possibly Saint James the Less. His left hand may once have held a staff or club, the instrument of Saint James’ martyrdom. Likely once part of a church interior, this figure and its companion, on view nearby, show the transition from the Gothic toward a new naturalism characteristic of Renaissance art. Subtle details like the pull of the fabric at the button on the saint’s chest, the hollow forms of his gaunt cheeks, and the furrows in his brow demonstrate the sculptor’s deft touch.
