Saint
ca. 1500
This figure represents a bishop saint, possibly Saint Boniface, an eighth-century monk who converted pagan populations in Germany. Limewood was valued for its physical characteristics, including a fine, malleable grain. The material marks this pair of sculptures as products of southern Germany, likely once part of a larger church ensemble. The smooth carving reflects a transition from the Gothic toward a new naturalism characteristic of Renaissance art. Notice the saint’s sensitive face and contrapposto pose, right knee bent forward, neck subtly tilted. The fringed, billowing drapery and the curving straps around his neck add movement to an otherwise stable figure.
