Ruins with Sybil
Artwork Viewer
Giovanni Paolo Panini was famous for his views of Rome, its monuments and ruins. This capriccio, or imaginary view, and its pendant nearby combine elements taken from actual ancient sculpture and architecture to produce pleasing stage sets populated by washerwomen, soldiers, and fanciful figures. The conventional titles of these works refer to their protagonists as a Sybil (a pagan prophetess) and a Prophet (an oracle in the Judeo-Christian tradition). Their intended identities might be somewhat more mundane, as the contemporary dress of the “Sybil” and the diffident pose of the “Prophet” suggest.
