The anonymous artist who painted this lovely red-figure pelike is known only as the Spreckels Painter, named after the founder of the Legion of Honor, Alma de Bretteville Spreckels, who donated the vessel to the museum. In the main scene Leto, holding an olive branch and staff, stands behind the twin deities Apollo and Artemis, her children fathered by Zeus. Apollo sits languidly, resting a kithara on his lap and holding an embossed drinking cup, while Artemis, carrying her bow, pour wine for her brother (as in the hydria also on view in the Hall of Antiquities). A pillar behind Apollo indicates a setting; to the left hangs his quiver, which is similar to the one Artemis carries across her back. The figures are serene and quiet, yet realistically drawn. Even the drapery falls in naturalistic folds.
