Pressed Iron Blossom #2
2005
Working across painting, sculpture, and printmaking, Willie Cole incorporates found objects into his artistic practice to engage directly with social histories of race and gender. Irons and ironing boards are recurring objects and motifs that appear in his work, serving as critical representations of domestic labor. This lithograph, printed at the renowned lithography workshop Tamarind Institute, located in New Mexico, repeats the iron motif but presents the object as a floral composition printed with vibrant colors that call to mind Black American quilts.
