Portrait of William III
Not on view
The Portrait of William III is a feast of ermine and curls. William's finely lined face, his wary gaze, his proud bony nose and his full lips are all perfectly framed by the cascade of dark curls which fall below his shoulders. There is a lace ruff at his neck and an ermine cape over a second embroidered cape on his shoulders. A magisterial necklace is draped over the ermine. The central pendant of the necklace is a figure of St. George Slaying the Dragon. William's half-length portrait is framed by a slightly oval frame and surrounded by symbols of his power--a crown and scepter, draped ermine, a bas relief medallion of Roman mythological figures, and a shield emblazoned with William's heraldry opposite a uniquely fierce war helmet.
