Jan Lievens's encounter with Anthony van Dyck at The Hague in the early 1630s had a profound effect on his ambitions. As his career got off the ground, he produced a number of commissioned portraits in a Van Dyckian mode, including this chalk drawing of the art collector and military commander Hieronymus de Bran. Lievens engaged Lucas Vorsterman the Elder, the reproductive printmaker who worked closely with Van Dyck, to create an engraving based on this drawing.
