Paper cover for the portfolio, L'Art décoratif théâtral moderne (Paris: La Cible, 1919)
Not on view
Russian avant-garde artists Natalia Goncharova and Mikhail Larionov published this collection of designs for costumes and stage sets in an edition of 515 copies in 1919, following a large exhibition of their work with the same title, Art décoratif théâtral moderne, at the Galerie Sauvage in Paris in 1918. Consisting of pochoirs (stencils) and color lithographs, the portfolio of prints includes designs by Goncharova for several of Sergei Diaghilev’s projects for the Ballets Russes in 1915 and 1916, Larionov’s designs for productions that went unrealized, and a text by musician and choreographer Valentin Parnakh that discusses Larionov’s theories on dance.
