One With
1958
The legacy of the American Abstract Artists (AAA) group and its impact on postwar art in the United States is manifest in the work of “hard-edged” abstractionists such as Frederick Hammersley. For Hammersley, shape was the most important of seven elements that made up a painting—the others were line, value, form, pattern, color, and texture—all of which he referred to as “actors.” In "One With," each of these components plays a critical role in enlivening a composition that is suffused with an almost kinetic sense of energy and dynamism, yet coheres into a balanced and harmonious whole.
