Nu féminin debout (Standing Female Nude), with an annotation from Loïe Fuller about the founding of the California Palace of the Legion of Honor
1915
Not on view
As noted in the inscription (see below), Rodin gifted this drawing to Loïe Fuller, the innovative dancer who was a leading cultural personality in belle époque Paris. Fuller, in turn, later sent the drawing to Eugène Rudier, whose foundry oversaw the casting of Rodin's bronzes. In her accompanying letter to Rudier, Fuller alludes to her friendship with Alma de Bretteville Spreckels (1881-1968), who founded the California Palace of the Legion of Honor. This drawing and extraordinary document is a gift to the Fine Arts Museums from Dodie Rosekrans (Mrs. John N. Rosekrans, Jr.), in memory of her husband, the grandson of Mrs. Spreckels.
Full translated transcription (F.R., 2025): "To Eugène Rudier from Loïe Fuller. This beautiful and incomparable work of the Master was presented to me as an expression of his love and esteem in Rome 1915 and in 1927 presented to Eugène Rudier whose life work and that of his father before him was, to put into everlasting Bronze the works of the Master and for which the world owes its undying gratitude. It is presented as a rare souvenir of the Master we both loved so profoundly and so well. In 1902 I took to America the first collection of the Master's works to show my countrymen in an exhibition I organized for that purpose in New York City. Not one person wanted one of his works, & in one month all the works were returned to "him." I tried to present a beautiful terra cotta of the great Bellone but it was refused because it was not in Bronze or Marble. On my return I promised the Master that one day we would create a French Museum in America as an education to my new country and we worked together for that purpose till his death. The news of the realization of our dream, of his heart's desire and our efforts--reached him on his death bed! It was the Palace of the Legion of Honour for which we have to thank Mr. A. B. and Alma de Bretteville Spreckels and Mr. Albert Tirman and the moral help of an unknown woman friend of Mrs. Spreckels, Mary Blessinger. Paris July 2nd 1927. Loïe Fuller"
