Not on view
In Rupy C. Tut’s triptych New Normal, two female figures observe a circular wall of fire encroaching on two solitary trees at the composition’s heart. Tut makes the connection between these women and the natural world explicit through the dupatta (headscarf) they wear. One scarf depicts the swirling eddies of the ocean, while the other scarf bursts with verdant blooms. In Punjabi culture, a woman’s dupatta can be read as an important material expression of the self, revealing the intimacy of her connection with the land.
Tut dismantles gendered constructs of traditional Pahari painting by placing women at the center of her compositions. In diasporic contexts, where notions of home and place diverge, the nurturance of both community and environment becomes crucial, emphasizing the importance of women’s voices in being a clarion call of climate change.
