Musée Grévin: Fantoches de John Hewelt (Musée Grévin: John Hewelt's Puppet Theater)
1900
Not on view
Puppet shows formed an important subgenre within the world of French popular theater in the late 19th century. Chéret's colorful poster advertises the elaborate marionette shows organized by John Hewelt (the stage name of Charles de Saint-Genois) in the theater within the Musèe Grèvin, a wax museum on the boulevard Montmartre. Hewelt's productions included marionettes based on famous performers of the day and included a full puppet orchestra and puppet spectators in theater boxes. This poster was printed without the text for the collector market.
