Belgian opera singer Marie Sass (1834-1907), the subject of this caricature, was a renowned soprano who joined the company of the Paris Opéra in 1860. She appears here in her role as Elisabeth de Valois in the 1867 premiere of Giuseppe Verdi's Don Carlos.
