Lunch, pl.1 from Delights
1964
Not on view
In 1964, during his first collaboration with the San Francisco–based Crown Point Press (then newly founded and located in Richmond), Wayne Thiebaud created seventeen images of pies, cakes, and other foods using etching and drypoint. The portfolio, titled Delights, was published in 1965. For this particular etching, Thiebaud drew inspiration from the lunch of master printer Kathan Brown, as she later recalled. A few years later, in 1967, the artist returned to this beloved etching by adding pastel and watercolor, thus creating an entirely new work of art (see inv. 1978.1.34).
