Lunch
1967
Not on view
In 1964, during his first collaboration with the San Francisco–based Crown Point Press (then newly founded and located in Richmond), Wayne Thiebaud created seventeen images of pies, cakes, and other foods using etching and drypoint. The portfolio, titled Delights, was published in 1965 (see inv. 1991.28.387). For this particular etching, Thiebaud drew inspiration from the lunch of master printer Kathan Brown, as she later recalled. Thiebaud often reworked proofs of his prints by adding pastel, watercolor, or colored pencil. He regarded these hand-colored impressions as unique works of art, independent of his printed oeuvre.
