Louis XVI mantel clock representing Study and Philosophy
Artwork Viewer
This magnificent clock is embellished with finely cast bronze figures representing Study and Philosophy, after models by the eminent French sculptor Louis-Simon Boizot. The seated figure of Study holds a writing implement in his right hand and a tablet in his left, while the standing figure of Philosophy reads a book, resting on her right elbow. Boizot specialized not only in full-scale works in the round but also small-scale figures such as these, some of which were also used as models for Sèvres porcelain. Many of his figures were incorporated into designs for clocks supplied to Louis XVI, Marie-Antoinette, and other members of the French royal family. In the present composition, the asymmetrical arrangement of his figures produces a harmonious concatenation of figures, forms, and multicolored materials. Intended for a study or library, with the globe signifying knowledge, the clock is executed in the finest gilt bronze characteristically found only in objects produced in the years just before the French Revolution. The plinth is made of very minutely chased gilt bronze with the front panel textured as grosgrain ribbon, while the elaborate movement is by the renowned maker Renacle-Nicolas Sotiau, whose fashionable designs were much favored at the French court.
