Édouard Manet's lithograph The Cats' Rendezvous, an advertisement for Champfleury's bestselling book Les Chats (The Cats), was published in La Chronique Illustrée as a gillotage. In this process, Manet's lithographic image would have been transferred to a zinc plate for printing in relief. For serials, the advantage of gillotage plates was that they could be printed on the same relief presses as the type with relatively minimal degradation in the quality of the image.
